Healthcare institutions have an obligation to provide effective resuscitation services and to ensure that their staff receive training and regular updates.

The Resuscitation Training Department within the Academic Centre was developed to ensure the delivery of resuscitation training in a standardised and organised way to maximize the chances of survival of patients suffering from a cardiopulmonary arrest.

The role of the Resusitation Training Department can be summarised as having the following four aspects:

CLINICAL
To act as a professional resource and to offer clinical advice on all aspects of resuscitation in both adults and paediatrics to staff within the Trust, whilst maintaining clinical credibility by attending and monitoring cardiac arrest situations.

TRAINING
To plan, organise and disseminate training in basic and advanced techniques of resuscitation to all levels of staff throughout the Trust, and to provide professional advice and support in relation to education and training. To co-ordinate and teach on nationally recognised life support courses.

MANAGERIAL
To identify and monitor the service provided and facilitate change as the service demands. To monitor local policies within the Trust with regards to resuscitation. To seek out and advise regarding clinical and training equipment used within the Trust.

RESEARCH
To seek out and disseminate relevant research findings and to implement those recommendations. To initiate an ongoing audit within the Trust in relation to cardiac arrest situations. To participate in and/or initiate local or national research projects.
